Cambridge RUFC
Shelford Rugby Club
On a miserable autumn day at a busy Volac park, Cambridge RUFC Under 15s took on local rivals, Shelford.
The first game of the county cup meant a strong Cambridge team Vs Shelford Blues team, a game against any Shelford team is always a challenge for a Cambridge team and this was no exception.  The first half was a scrappy affair with both teams failing to protect their own ball and turnovers were frequent.  One part of Cambridge's game which was working well was the driving maul and this is where the first score came from.  The pack led by skipper, Daniel Kember, held together and drove over the 22 before the skipper spotted a gap on the blind and darted over to score. The try was successfully converted by Keir Harper.  Shelford kept battling and after some nice interplay between the forwards, the ball spread wide for Shelford to score which they would also convert to draw level.
Another strong drive from the Cambridge pack brought more success with Kember getting his second.  At half time the score was 12-7 to Cambridge and the both teams were ready to battle for victory.
Some strong work from Cambridge resulted in two more tries from Kember, 1 for the excellent lock, Franklin Scott, 1 for our winger, Patrick Mangell and a final score from Tom Prior finished off a strong second half, despite some excellent play from Shelford the score finished 37-7 to Cambridge. Tough conditions out there today but a superb effort by the Cambridge team.  Special mention to the skipper who led by example and also to number 8, Tom Evers who had a superb game.  thank you to Shelford for an excellent game played with great spirit by all players on both sides and good luck for the rest of the season.
Focus switches to Huntingdon next week when Cambridge face the team that denied them County cup honours last season. It promises to be a mouth watering affair.
