Cambridge RUFC Women’s team were back to winning ways after a tough game v Shelford RFC the weekend before, coming out deserved winners 45-7 v Letchworth RFC Lionesses.
The sun was out with a small wind heading up the pitch at Cambridge RUFC for the return fixture v Letchworth RFC (previously CRUFC had lost the away fixture back in Oct 2022 by 52 points to 0). This game showed how far we had come since the start of the season.
Both teams were able to field a full XV which is always great to see, despite Jess pulling out last minute due to a pulled calf. There were still some sore bodies from the game the week before.
The game plan for Cambridge Women – to get the ball out into the backs, away from Letchworth’s bigger forwards, and look to overcome them with speed.
CRUFC played into the wind in the first half, and it wasn’t long before we were hitting our straps.
Try 1 - Cat Hamilton made a break after showing great support and scooted down the wing, and dotted down under the posts, putting the first points on the scoreboard. Converted by Emily Hay.
Then a quick move by Emily brought us our 2nd try as she tapped quickly from a penalty to score, and duly converted her own try.
By now Cambridge were in full flow, and some great work from Miranda Lam put No 8 and Captain Jaz Reed into space to score the 3rd try of the afternoon.
For the 4th try, Allegra Sloot found some space after a scrum, and left the defence for dust
Kate Willis broke away after some good hands by the backs to get the 5th try (converted by Emily again).
Just before half time Emily took the ball, and did a fantastic dummy to deceive the defence and scored, converting her own try.
Half Time CRUFC were up 38-0 and looking good, with the wind at their backs for the 2nd half.
Suffice to say, Letchworth RFC Lionesses fought back – they offered a great test for our forwards, and Cambridge tackled everything that moved. What was great to see was our defence and moving up together to meet the attacking player.
Only 1 try in the 2nd half to Cambridge – to Jaz again, after some more good work by Miranda (converted by Emily).
The Lionesses came back and scored one of their own in the last play, and with great cheer managed to convert it for the 7 points
Final score was 45-7 to Cambridge RUFC Women, played in great spirit. Kudos must go to the Lionesses aa they kept on going. Well done
A massive improvement on the previous week, and its great to see the work done at training paying off.
Well done to all our Women, and special thanks to Emily for helping Letchworth RFC when they went down to 13 women (she offered to swap sides and help them).
One last mention to Clare Daniels (referee) who kept the game moving and showed her knowledge and experience. Clare is the world's most capped female Test referee, and it was a pleasure to have her officiate. Thank you.
Team: Roberta, Marnie, Alex, Isabel, Scarlett, Allegra, Anja, Jaz, Amber, Emily, Katie, Molly, Miranda, Cat, Kate, Sophie & Jess.
